14:00 BST Sat 21 Sep 2024 – 21:00 BST Sat 21 Sep 2024

Areas affected

  • Midlands
  • Parts of southern N England
  • N Wales

Hazards

  • Hail 15-20mm diameter
  • Wind gusts to 50mph
  • CG lightning
  • Isolated tornadoes
  • Heavy rain

Discussion

Scattered showers and thunderstorms will continue to develop towards the south and east of the area, and move WNW this afternoon. They should tend to expand in coverage into one or more clusters. The stronger cells may bring marginally severe hail and wind gusts. With some backed low-level flow, especially across parts of the Midlands, a brief tornado cannot be ruled out, given low cloud bases.

Severe thunderstorms

TORRO defines a severe thunderstorm as producing one or more of the following:
  • one or more tornadoes and / or waterspouts
  • hail with diameter of at least 20mm
  • non-tornadic winds gusting to 55 mph or more at surface (but which are not part of synoptic-scale straight-line winds of such velocities)
Thunder/lightning does not necessarily need to be present for any of the conditions listed above to occur.
