In The News
September has been an active month with a number of severe weather events being brought to the
attention of TORRO. Some of these have attracted a level of media interest and this has given some
members of TORRO an opportunity to raise awareness of the organisation and its work.
One such event was the tornado in
Derby on the 14th. This storm occurred over the centre of Derby and uprooted large trees,
damaging roofs and there was also reports of lightning and heavy rain. TORRO member Dave Evans
carried out the site investigation into this event,
which can be read here.
Another tornado was also reported to have occurred on the 14th at Leeds and Harrogate. Similar to
the Derby storm this event also occurred in a highly populated area and this meant that there were
many witnesses to the storm. It also meant that this storm received a lot of media interest and
this led to TORRO being mentioned in a number of articles. Unlike the Derby storm, this event also
occurred through rural areas towards Harrogate. TORRO member Tim Prosser performed the site
investigation into this event and has produced a report that can be downloaded
from the thread, here.
There is so much that can be learnt about an event through a site investigation being carried out,
demonstrated here by TORRO Executives Sam Jowett and Stuart Robinson when they investigated a
report of a tornado at Barlestone in Leicestershire. Their findings lead to the this report being
re-classified as straight line winds. TORRO executive John Tyrrell has also carried out site
investigations this month, a report of a tornado at numerous locations in
Co. Wexford
that was reported by John to be exaggerated albeit still a tornado, and another report at Aclare
in Co. Sligo that was confirmed as a tornadic event.
Site Investigation
Members are reminded that that one of the prime functions of TORRO is to
acquire and research severe weather. This can only be achieved by the pro-active involvement
of its members in this worthwhile activity. It is only by getting out and seeing the damage and
recoding the detail in person that we can hope to gain a true understanding of what has occurred.
