COMMENTS
The TORRO archive has often shown November to be a prolific month for severe weather across the UK. On the contrary there has been little or nothing current to research neither during this month nor of November 2003. This can easily throw doubt as to reliance on figures and statistics that we accumulate over the years. It is true to say that true averages are estimated over long periods of time i.e. ten or twenty years or more. But in the short term it is very hard to define the risk of an active period. Alas this is so often the first question made by media correspondents!
TORRO WEB SITE
Many thanks to David Hollingworth for a magnificent job with creating the new look TORRO web site. David has since become a full member and has offered his services as the new web master. It is hoped that we will soon have a Pay Pal page whereby new members can apply as members online. This will greatly reduce any unnecessary correspondence. Sam jowett has offered to follow this item up and will work with David in setting the page up soon. It has also been decided that we will set up an online severe weather-reporting page much like the estofex version. This is after all what TORRO has already been doing for the past thirty years. This will once again help reduce paperwork, though TORRO will continue to personally follow up most if not all-severe weather events within the UK for confirmation.
EUROPEAN REPRESENTITIVE
Congratulations to Sam Jowett for taking on this role within the organisation and for his promotion to executive. This is an area of TORRO’s work, which has been rather neglected. For TORRO to maintain its stature amongst other meteorological organisation within Europe it is important that we maintain a good line of communication. All European severe weather events that come to the attention of members should now be directed to sam.jowett@torro.org.uk Thank you
EXTREME RAINFALL DIVISION.
Many thanks to John Mason who has offered his services with running this division of work within TORRO. Items such as the Boscastle event will now have a research division to collate information for the Journal of Meteorology. All similar events should now be passed on to john.mason@torro.org.uk (this address may not be set up quite yet).
MEDIA AND TV CONTACT
Well done executive Stuart Robinson for an excellent effort whilst filming for channel five. Stuart managed to highlight TORRO’s work and correct a few myths in the public sector.
FINAL WORD
Apologies if I have missed anyone out for credit in the newsletter. Christmas is almost upon us all once again so we will all have other things on our minds for a time.
TORRO staff would like to wish everyone a merry Christmas and a very stormy new year
Best Wishes
