Spatial Distribution of Tornadoes in England and Wales to 2002
In 2005, The Tornado and Storm Research Organisation (TORRO) was consulted for the Channel 4, U.K. television
programme, 'Equinox Special: Britain's Tornado' a programme on the Birmingham City tornado of July 2005. The
programme makers, Pioneer Productions, produced an animated map of tornadoes in the UK based on selected TORRO
data. This map was a representation of known tornado events but it should be noted it does not included the
full TORRO database of events. It should also be noted that this map is 'work in progress', however it does
give a very interesting and valuable insight into tornadoes in England and Wales.
On average the United Kingdom experiences 35-40 tornadoes a year, but this average will fluctuate, particularly with the improved communications and a growing network of TORRO reporters. In 2004 there were 70 tornadoes, 2005 63 tornadoes and 2006 ~49 tornadoes. Should you have any specific questions, please feel free to contact TORRO staff.
